Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Edwardian barrister bookcase dates from the early 1900s and is made from solid oak with a warm brown finish. It has five tiers with glazed up-and-over doors, small round brass pull knobs on each front edge, a stepped cornice along the top, and a plinth base at the bottom. Original maker stamps are visible on the internal wood surfaces. The sectional stackable frame breaks down into individual tiers and stands 197 cm high, 87 cm wide, and 42 cm deep. In a modern interior, this piece serves as a practical storage unit for books, papers, or displayed collectibles. It is well suited for placement in a home study, library, living room, or hallway to organise reading materials while keeping items protected behind glass panels.

FAQs

A barrister bookcase is a modular, sectional storage unit designed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, featuring individual glass-fronted compartments with up-and-over doors to protect legal volumes from dust.

These pieces are typically constructed from solid oak or mahogany, fitted with clear glass panes and small brass or wooden knobs on each retractable door.

Authentic pieces feature manufacturer stamps or printed labels on the back panels inside the sections, as well as specific patented scissor-arm or roller mechanisms for the up-and-over doors.

Position the unit in a study, hallway, or living area to store books, curating individual tiers with ceramics, framed artwork, or collections behind the protective glass doors.

Clean the glass panels using a mild glass cleaner applied to a cloth, and polish the oak timber periodically with natural beeswax to preserve the original finish and patina.
