This Victorian pair of small apothecary bottles originates from around 1890, representing the classic style of nineteenth-century medicine storage. Each cylindrical vessel is formed from Bristol green glass, featuring a flanged neck, a smooth pontil mark to the base, and an original square-shaped moulded glass stopper with a square flat top. A gold leaf paper label wraps around the front of each bottle, edged with black and red borders and lettered in black. One label reads 'SCOPOL' while the other reads 'TUSSIL', showing signs of wear and chipping along the edges. Measuring 14 cm in height and 4.5 cm in diameter, these small apothecary jars suit display on an open bookshelf or within a gentleman's library setting. They provide a practical decorative accent for a study or cabinet display, integrating easily into traditional or eclectic interior spaces as standalone decorative objects or part of a collection of vintage apothecary items.

During the late Victorian period, coloured glass bottles were extensively used by chemists and pharmacists to store tinctures and chemical compounds, with green glass often designated for light-sensitive solutions.

These bottles were typically hand-blown or mould-blown using heavy coloured glass, featuring ground glass stoppers precisely fitted to form an airtight seal alongside hand-gilded or painted glass labels.

Authentic 19th-century examples display slight imperfections in the glass, hand-ground stoppers with matching numbers or custom fittings, pontil marks or smooth bases, and period-appropriate gilding and lettering.

Pairing these vibrant glass pieces on open shelving, a bathroom counter, or a mantelpiece alongside modern ceramics or dried botanicals creates a curated contrast of textures and historical interest.

Clean gently using a soft dry cloth or lukewarm water around unlabelled areas, avoiding harsh chemical detergents, soaking, or scrubbing the delicate gilded surface labels to prevent flaking.
