This Jacobean Revival table lamp dates from 1900 and brings period character to a gentleman's library or study. The lamp consists of a warm brown wooden body finished with a circular stepped base, decorative rings above, and a barley twist stem running up to support the fitting. A dark grey dome shade tops the structure, fitted with a V-shaped glass bead fringe in translucent and dark tones that diffuses the light. New wiring updates the electrical components while maintaining the traditional appearance of the piece. Placement suits the top of a wooden sideboard, desk, or side table where ambient or task lighting is required. The lamp stands 76 cm high with a shade diameter of 30 cm, providing substantial presence for domestic interiors without dominating surface space. Simple maintenance requires occasional dusting of the wooden surfaces and careful handling of the delicate beaded fringe along the lower edge of the fabric shade.

FAQs

A barley twist table lamp features a central wooden column turned into a helical spiral pattern, a motif inspired by Seventeenth Century woodturning techniques.

Traditional turned lamps are constructed from dense hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, walnut, or beech, often paired with woven fabric or beaded shades.

Authentic examples display hand-turned variations in the wood grain, natural patina, historical brass lamp fittings, and age-appropriate construction joins.

Position the lamp on a contemporary sideboard, console, or desk to introduce texture, warm illumination, and architectural interest through visual contrast.

Clean the wooden stem with a soft microfibre cloth and specialized wood wax, while using a soft brush or compressed air to gently clear dust from glass bead fringe.
