Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Hall lanterns originated as enclosed light fixtures designed to protect open candle flames from draughts in corridors and entryways. During the nineteenth century, advances in metal casting allowed craftsmen to produce decorative brass and gilded bronze frames containing glass panes, suspended centrally to illuminate grand staircases and foyers.

Traditional English lanterns were constructed using cast brass or bronze, often finished with fire-gilding (ormolu) or lacquered gilding. Clear flat or curved glass panels were fitted into the metal armature to enclose internal candle holders or early electrical fittings.

Authentic period lanterns display cast metal construction with hand-chased decorative details such as foliate swags, scrolls, or rams heads. Look for signs of historic hand-assembly, natural oxidisation on unpolished surfaces, and evidence of previous conversion from gas or candle power to electricity.

A classical hall lantern serves as a focal point when hung high in an entrance foyer, stairwell, or tall dining area. Pairing historic metalwork with neutral wall palettes and architectural moulding creates a balanced, timeless aesthetic.

Preserve gilded bronze by removing dust regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush. Avoid using abrasive polishes, liquid solvents, or water on original gilding, and ensure electrical rewiring is conducted by a qualified specialist.
