For Sale by Puckerings
Description

A lovely Art Deco silver plated tray by the top-notch silversmith, Maison Christofle of Paris. A highly sought-after simple design with a linear border.

Signed on the underside with the Gallia with Cockerel mark about / France / The empty square box visible below "FRANCE" originally housed Christofle's signature Chess Knight / Rider emblem.

Maison Christofle is an iconic French silversmith and luxury homegoods manufacturer founded in Paris in 1830 by the visionary industrialist Charles Christofle. For nearly two centuries, the company revolutionized how precious metals were used, transforming silverware from an exclusive luxury of royalty into a hallmark of refined living across the globe.

The house became the official supplier to King Louis-Philippe I and later Emperor Napoleon III, creating massive, breathtaking centrepieces and banquet service sets for French palaces.

Christofle swept gold medals at the legendary World Fairs, including the 1851 Great Exhibition in London and the 1855 Universal Exhibition in Paris. They soon provided lavish custom tableware to foreign monarchs, sultanates, luxury ocean liners, and grand hotels.

Just back from our silversmith's workshop where it has been professionally cleaned and polished, restoring it to it's former glory (minor wear commensurate with age and use). Excellent condition measuring 13 1/4" in diameter.

This Art Deco circular cocktail tray comes from the workshop of Maison Christofle in Paris, dating from 1940. Made of silver-plated metal in a bright silver colour, the piece has a polished surface with a stepped moulded rim and linear border. The underside bears the manufacturer's Gallia with Cockerel signature mark alongside the inscription 'FRANCE'. Minor wear commensurate with age and use is visible on the metal surface following professional cleaning and polishing. The tray measures 2 cm high, 33.66 cm wide and 33.66 cm deep. In a modern interior, this item serves as functional tableware for presenting drinks and glassware. It sits appropriately on a sideboard top, dining table, or cocktail cabinet in a living room, dining room, or bar area. The minimalist circular form integrates easily into contemporary and traditional home settings alike.

Introduced by the French silversmith firm Christofle around the turn of the 20th century, the Gallia line utilised a specialised alloy electroplated with silver, becoming renowned for Art Deco and modernist barware design.

Mid-century silver-plated trays feature a base metal core, such as copper-tin alloy or brass, electroplated with a layer of pure silver and finished with turned or moulded rims for structural rigidity.

Authentic pieces feature stamped maker marks on the underside, including the Gallia trade name, a rooster or knight chess piece emblem, and specific production numbers.

A circular silver tray can be placed on a sideboard or coffee table to group decanters, glassware, or candles, adding a reflective surface and visual structure to the arrangement.

To preserve the electroplated silver finish, clean gently using a soft cloth with specialist silver polish, avoiding abrasive pads or harsh chemicals that strip the micro-layer of silver.
