Tea caddies emerged in Europe in the late seventeenth century as secure containers to store valuable dried tea leaves. By the early twentieth century, such as during the George V period, silver tea caddies served both functional storage purposes and as refined decorative table accoutrements.

Silver tea caddies from this era were typically raised from sterling silver sheets, featuring fluted, gadrooned, or chased decoration. Lids were constructed with precise hinges or push-fit rims, often topped with non-conductive wood or ebonised finials to allow easy handling.

Authentic British pieces bear official assay office hallmarks stamped into the metal casing. These include the lion passant for sterling silver, a town mark, a specific date letter representing the year of manufacture, and a makers mark.

A silver tea caddy functions well on a dining room sideboard, tray table, or bookshelf. It creates contrast when grouped with stoneware, glass barware, or natural timber surfaces.

Clean silver gently using a soft, lint-free cloth and specialized, non-abrasive silver polish to prevent scratching. Store in low-humidity environments and avoid harsh chemical cleaners to prevent premature tarnish and oxidisation.
