This nineteenth-century Imperial Russian silver niello spoon belongs to the gentlemen's library style category. The piece is fashioned from silver with gold gilt and black niello, displaying a silver and gold colour palette. The elongated handle showcases a twisted stem terminating in a small knopped finial, while the oval bowl features dense niello engraving across the reverse in a foliate scrollwork motif. Dark patination highlights the intricate engraved details against the metallic surface of the bowl. Practical placement includes display on a sideboard top or within a cabinet collection. The spoon measures 19 cm in length, 5 cm in width, and 3 cm in depth. The accessory brings historical metalwork character to a traditional interior setting and suits a collector of fine decorative tableware.

Niello is a black metallic compound composed of silver, copper, lead, and sulphur fused into engraved lines on silver items. The technique reached high prominence in Russia, particularly in centres such as Veliky Ustyug and Moscow, producing intricate dark patterns against a polished silver or gilt backdrop.

These pieces were crafted primarily from standard Russian silver alloys, often marked with an 84 zolotnik purity stamp (equivalent to 875/1000 purity). The engraved areas were filled with the niello mixture, and the remaining metal surfaces were frequently fire-gilded to produce a contrasting gold accent.

Authentic items typically display official Russian hallmark stamps, including the standard purity mark (such as 84), an assayers mark with a date, and a makers mark in Cyrillic. The niello work should feel flush with the surrounding silver surface without flaking or uneven composition.

Smaller silver decorative items are frequently displayed inside glass shadow boxes, presented on velvet trays atop sideboards, or arranged in tabletop vitrines to add historical interest and metallic tone to modern living spaces.

Cleaning requires mild soapy water and a soft cloth to avoid scratching or stripping any surface gilded accents. Abrasive polishes and chemical dips must be avoided, as they can permanently erode the niello compound and strip delicate gilding.
