This Victorian solid silver calling card and stamp case measures 0.5 cm high, 8.5 cm wide and 5 cm deep. The rectangular object has deep-cut scroll design engraving across the surface, a lunette design border, a blank cartouche, and a hinged side edge with a press catch. Hallmarked Birmingham 1876, it carries the makers mark for Hilliard & Thomason. Position this piece on an office desk as a traditional receptacle for cards or stamps, or place it on a side table in a gentleman's library study. The metallic silver exterior pairs with an internal lining, providing a period accent for a workspace interior.

During the Victorian era, social etiquette required visitors to leave calling or visiting cards when attending formal social calls. Dedicated cases were carried in pockets or purses to protect printed cards from damage and soiling.

Victorian card cases were crafted using precious metals such as sterling silver, along with mother-of-pearl, tortoiseshell, ivory, and papier-mache. Silver examples frequently featured hand-engraved, engine-turned, or repousse decorative surfaces.

Authentic British Victorian silver cases feature official assay hallmarks, including a lion passant for sterling silver, a town mark, a date letter, and a makers mark. The presence of a monarchs head duty mark indicates manufacture between 1784 and 1890.

An antique silver card case can be placed on an office desk, styled inside a glass display cabinet, or incorporated into a decorative vignette on a tray or bookshelf alongside leather-bound books and brass objects.

Antique silver should be gently dusted with a soft, lint-free cloth and polished occasionally using a specialised silver polishing cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, immersion in harsh chemicals, or excessive friction over hand-engraved details.
