Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Developed in the nineteenth century, porcelain oil lamps provided primary domestic lighting before widespread electrification. They combined utility with decorative craftsmanship, often displaying hand-painted motifs and cast metal fittings as symbols of status in Victorian parlours.

These lamps typically feature a central porcelain column or reservoir, brass or gilt-bronze burner assemblies and bases, and a glass shade or draft chimney designed to control airflow and protect the flame.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit natural age-related patination on the metal components, hand-painted enamel decoration rather than modern transfers, and period-appropriate burner mechanisms marked with historical maker names.

An antique oil lamp serves as a striking decorative focal point when placed on a sideboard, console table, or mantelpiece. Many collectors choose to preserve them as non-functional statement pieces or have them professionally converted to electricity for modern lighting needs.

Clean porcelain surfaces using a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleansers that may damage hand-painted details. Metal elements should be dusted gently, and glass chimneys cleaned separately with mild detergent and warm water.
