This Georgian elm six-plank coffer is a rustic farmhouse storage piece. The timber displays a rich dark brown colour with a natural grain and well-developed patina, complemented by moulded edging along the top and base, an oval keyhole escutcheon on the front, and shaped cut-out feet supporting the structure. Measuring 62 cm high, 112 cm wide and 38 cm deep, the coffer includes a hinged lid that opens to reveal a spacious interior. In a home today, this trunk provides practical storage space in a hallway, bedroom or living room, whilst serving as a traditional focal point with historical character.

A six-plank coffer is a traditional form of wooden storage chest constructed from six solid timber boards joined together, historically used for storing linens and household goods during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Georgian craftsmen commonly utilised native hardwoods such as oak, elm, and pine, constructing chest boards with simple nailed, pegged, or dovetailed joinery alongside iron or brass lock plates.

Authentic Georgian pieces display hand-sawn timber marks, natural shrinkage along the grain, irregular hand-forged nails or wooden dowels, and an aged patina with genuine surface wear around hand-shaped feet.

An antique coffer functions effectively at the foot of a bed, as a hallway storage bench, or as a central coffee table in a living space, adding natural timber texture to contemporary interiors.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and excessive humidity.
