FAQs

Edwardian salad servers typically combine functional metalwork, such as hallmarked sterling silver bowls and tines, with decorative handles made from cut glass, crystal, or bone. Designs from this period often featured classic patterns, such as the rat tail drop on the reverse of the spoon.

Turn-of-the-century serving utensils were frequently constructed from solid sterling silver or silver plate paired with carved lead crystal, cut glass, mother-of-pearl, or ivory handles to prevent acidic salad dressings from corroding organic materials.

Authentic British sterling silver from the Edwardian period carries a complete set of hallmarks, including the lion passant mark for silver purity, an assay office symbol such as the Chester three sheaves, a date letter, and a makers mark.

Antique servers can be integrated into contemporary dining arrangements by pairing them with minimalist modern ceramics or placing them on a sideboard as decorative table accessories during dinner service.

Silver components should be cleaned gently with a dedicated silver polishing cloth, avoiding abrasive creams near glass joins. Glass handles should be washed carefully by hand in warm water with mild detergent and dried immediately to prevent water spots.
