This eighteenth-century Georgian vernacular box settle originates from around 1760 and is rendered in a warm brown timber with a waxed finish. The piece functions as both a bench and a storage chest, incorporating a hinged lid seat above a box base with an iron keyhole escutcheon on the front. Raised ends display stout turned column spindles beneath flat wooden arm tops, while turned legs connect to low horizontal runners near the floor. Signs of age include visible woodworm holes and period repairs to the structural feet. Measuring 145 cm wide, 78.5 cm high, and 37 cm deep, the settle provides hidden interior space suitable for storing boots and shoes in an entrance hall or living room setting. The interior compartment is accessed by lifting the single-piece seat lid, which operates on original iron hoop hinges. Solid construction and a sturdy profile make this rustic farmhouse bench practical for everyday seating and organization in a traditional home interior.

A box settle is a traditional piece of country furniture featuring a hinged seat that opens to reveal an integrated storage compartment beneath. Originating in rural households during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, these benches served the dual purpose of seating and utilitarian storage.

Eighteenth-century vernacular settles were primarily constructed from locally sourced hardwoods and softwoods such as oak, elm, and pine. Hand-turned spindles, pegged mortise-and-tenon joints, and iron fittings were standard construction methods.

Authentic pieces exhibit evidence of period hand craftsmanship, including hand-sawn timber marks, wooden dowel joinery, historical iron lock escutcheons, and natural uneven wear on high-touch areas like the seat and armrests.

An antique box settle functions well placed in an entryway, boot room, or dining space. Pairing the warm timber with neutral linens, contemporary artwork, or stone flooring creates a balanced blend of historical character and modern design.

Maintain the timber by applying a natural beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the original patina and prevent desiccation. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations.
