Rare & Rather Curious Saxon Era Come Victorian Scratch Built Stool with a Winchester Connection

19th century
Description

A Rare And Rather Curious Saxon Era Come Victorian Scratch Built Stool With A Winchester Connection. It Is Engraved Underneath With The Wording “Oak Used By The Saxons in Winchester AD 600. Stool AD 1888.”

Astonishingly, the wording to the bottom of the panel suggests it dates from the Saxon period. And, it was during the late 19th century that someone decided to have a go at making stool with it…! Using this ancient piece of wood, they elaborately carved one side in classic Victorian style and then added four legs, in a very crude make-do manner, that oozes character and charm.

From about 660 to the 11th century, Winchester was the religious, political, and cultural heart of Anglo-Saxon England, especially under King Alfred and his successors in Wessex.

This piece has so many wonderful elements going for it and is a favourite find.

Condition is as seen. Structurally sound but a display piece rather than a usable piece of furniture.

Measurements:

Height: 32cms

Width of the top: 28.5cms

Depth of the top: 23cms

Maximum width between the legs: 31cms

Maximum depth between the legs: 31cm

Weighs 2550 grams

This rustic folk art stool is an antique oak object finished in a dark brown tone. It consists of a thick top panel decorated with hand-carved shell motif carving and four turned wooden legs arranged in a splayed leg construction. The timber displays visible surface wear, scratches, and grain variations reflecting its age and handmade construction. Measuring 32 cm in height, the seat top measures 28.5 cm in width by 23 cm in depth. In a modern interior, this piece is suitable as a decorative display item placed beside a fireplace hearth or as an accent object on a low surface. It is designed to be viewed as a conversational folk art collectible rather than for everyday seating use.

Folk art furniture from these eras often features hand-carved geometric or botanical motifs, scratch-built joinery, and functional forms inspired by early medieval or vernacular traditions.

These stools were typically crafted from local dense hardwoods such as oak or elm, utilising turned wooden legs joined directly into a solid carved seat slab.

Authentic antique examples display hand-carved tool marks, natural shrinkage around joints, rich historical surface patina, and pegged or wedged tenon leg joinery.

Position the piece as a textural side accent near a hearth, use it as a low plant stand, or place it beside an armchair to add historical contrast to a modern room.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax paste polish annually, avoiding water contact and direct heat sources to prevent timber splitting.
