FAQs

Art Deco standard lamps emerged in the 1920s and 1930s, characterised by clean geometric forms, stepped bases, and streamlined vertical columns. They served functional lighting needs while adding architectural structure to interior spaces.

Craftsmen during the Art Deco era frequently used rich hardwoods such as walnut, oak, and mahogany, often combined with ebonised details or chrome accents. Lampshades typically featured pleated fabrics, silk fringing, or frosted glass shades.

Look for geometric design motifs, including stepped or tiered bases, square or octagonal columns, and period-correct internal wiring routes. Authentic pieces display age-appropriate surface patina on timber elements and ebonised details.

Position the lamp beside an armchair or sofa to establish a focused reading area with warm light. The geometric timber construction offers contrast when placed against plain contemporary walls.

Dust timber elements regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish along the grain periodically. Fabric shades should be gently cleaned using a soft brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner to prevent dust accumulation.
