This Edwardian set of six antique butter knives dates to 1920 and originates from England. Each utensil has a sterling silver handle and a steel blade, complete with blunt spatulate blades and moulded handles. The collection comes housed in its original fitted presentation case featuring an off-white silk lining with pleated retaining bands and a dark blue velvet knife bed inside a dark case. The silver handles show minor dents and dinks, the steel blades exhibit slight wear along their edges, and the interior silk bears stains and wear near the hinges alongside light scuffs on the exterior box edges. Individual pieces measure 18 cm in length, while the outer storage box measures 21 cm wide by 15 cm high. Traditional British cutlery collections of this nature suit display upon a dining room sideboard top or use during formal afternoon teas and breakfast services in a home today. Collectors of Edwardian tableware will find this service complements traditional table settings, while hosts can employ the individual butter spreaders for serving dairy at the dining table. The polished silver finish reflects light effectively when the storage case remains open during presentation. Regular gentle cleaning maintains the metal surfaces, allowing the matched set to function as both a practical dining accessory and a decorative tabletop element within an English country house interior.

Cased silver butter knives were popularised during the 19th and early 20th centuries as refined additions to formal afternoon tea services and multi-course dining settings.

These utensils typically feature sterling silver or silver-plated handles fitted to steel or silver blades, housed inside velvet- and silk-lined presentation boxes.

Authentic pieces generally display hallmark stampings on either the handle or blade, denoting the silver purity standard, assay office location, makers mark, and date code.

Pair cased silver knives with contemporary ceramic dinnerware or minimalist glass boards during afternoon tea, cheese tastings, or brunch service to add textural interest.

Hand wash the blades and handles gently with warm water and mild dish soap, dry thoroughly, polish occasionally with specialized silver polish, and store inside the dry case.
