This early Victorian sterling silver gilt vinaigrette from Birmingham dates to 1845 and carries the maker mark of Nathaniel Mills. The rectangular container opens via a hinged lid to reveal a gilded interior featuring a pierced foliate grille with floral motifs. The exterior displays engine-turned details on the lid and base, ribbed sides, and a vacant cartouche, alongside the visible hallmarks stamped on the inside lid. Surface wear is minimal and commensurate with age, with good internal gilding and clear hallmarks. Measuring 3.8 cm by 2.7 cm by 0.8 cm and weighing 17.5 grams, the piece is suited for display on a gentleman's library or office desk as a small decorative accessory. It rests flat on surfaces, functions with a hinged opening, and suits collection displays or desktop organisation.

A vinaigrette was a small decorative metal container containing a sponge soaked in scented vinegar or aromatic oils, used during the 18th and 19th centuries to mask unpleasant odours and prevent faintness.

They were crafted from sterling silver with a gilded interior to prevent acidic aromatic solutions from corroding the metal, featuring an intricate hinged pierced grille to hold the sponge securely.

Authentic British pieces bear complete hallmark sets, including a makers mark, town mark, lion passant indicating sterling purity, date letter, and sovereign head duty mark.

These compact items are suited for display inside glass tabletop showcases, shadow boxes, or arranged alongside desk accessories on a tray.

Clean exterior surfaces gently with a dry silver polishing cloth, avoiding chemical dips or abrasive cleaners that can remove gilding or damage intricate interior metalwork.
