Queen Anne Oak and Elm Joint Stool C. 1700

18th century
Description

A lovely and original joined oak stool with original timbers throughout and original peg joints.

In excellent condition, sturdy and solid. One small shake to edge of one stretcher, not through just on the surface and old, stable and not going anywhere.

The legs and seat are oak, the seat rails and stretchers are elm.

From a local country house, with a very attractive natural warm and rich patina and a really great colour.

A provincial stool with turned barrel legs and blocked stretchers and well shaped original top.

Nice example, heavy and with a splayed shape for stability. Stools like this are rarely found in such original condition.

A joint stool, also referred to as a joined stool, is a form of early timber seating or small table constructed using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs, widely produced in England from the 16th to early 18th centuries.

Joint stools were handcrafted primarily from native hardwoods like oak and elm, featuring hand-turned legs, perimeter box stretchers for structural stability, and mortise and tenon joints fastened with wooden dowels rather than metal nails.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-planed timber surfaces, visible peg ends, historic wear across the lower stretchers caused by foot placement, and natural shrinkage or patination accumulated over centuries.

A joint stool functions effectively as an accent side table alongside a sofa, a compact bedside stand, or a display surface for contemporary ceramics, introducing tactile wood grain to modern spaces.

Position early timber away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity to prevent cracking or warping, and apply a beeswax polish periodically to preserve the natural finish.
