This vintage 20th century blanket box is made from dark brown oak in the Jacobean Revival style, originating around 1930. The piece has a hinged lid with a moulded edge above a carved lunette frieze on the top rail. The front elevation is divided into three recessed panels framed by mouldings, showing a central vertical diamond lozenge containing rosette motifs alongside stacked circular roundels on the flanking panels. Sturdy stile feet support the structure at the corners, and the timber displays a rich finish. It measures 57.5 cm high, 107.5 cm wide, and 45 cm deep. Practical for everyday use, the interior provides storage space suitable for blankets, linen, or toys. The proportions allow the item to function effectively as a coffee table or window seat, and it integrates naturally into a bedroom, hallway, or living room within an English Country House setting.

FAQs

A Jacobean style coffer is a wooden storage chest inspired by 17th-century English furniture design, characterised by solid construction, geometric panelling, and hand-carved decorative motifs such as lunettes and lozenges.

Traditionally crafted from native oak timber, these chests feature frame-and-panel joinery, mortise and tenon joints, and deeply carved relief panels designed for long-term structural durability.

Key identification markers include geometric carved panels, lunette friezes along the top rail, central rosettes, and dark patinated oak wood combined with heavy-gauge timber construction.

Place the box at the foot of a bed, within an entryway, or along a hallway to introduce rich timber tones and tactile historical carving alongside contemporary neutral textiles.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a neutral beeswax polish along the grain annually to protect the oak timber and preserve the carved detail.
