An antique mid Victorian rosewood and needlework cheval fire screen dates from the nineteenth century. The dark brown timber frame surrounds a polychrome needlepoint textile panel depicting a coastal harbour scene with figures, boats, and thatched buildings. Turned columns stand at each side, topped with small spires, while four further spires adorn the cheval feet. The frame incorporates elaborate fretwork cresting at the top and bottom, alongside a central turned stretcher with fretwork panel decoration joining the cabriole-shaped feet. The piece measures 117 cm high, 81 cm wide, and 41.5 cm deep. In a contemporary home, the screen sits by a fireplace hearth in a living room or study to deflect radiant heat when the fire burns. It also functions as a decorative room divider or focal point within an English country house style interior. The substantial wooden construction and textile insert bring texture and period character to traditional hearth settings.

A Victorian cheval fire screen is a freestanding decorative panel set within a four-legged wood frame, historically placed near open fireplaces to protect sitters and decorative finishes from direct heat.

These screens were commonly constructed using dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut, and were fitted with hand-stitched needlepoint, wool embroidery, or woven tapestry panels.

Authentic Victorian examples display traditional cabinetmaking techniques such as mortise and tenon joints, hand-carved fretwork cresting, hand-worked textile stitching, and natural oxidisation or patina on the timber.

A period fire screen can be styled inside a non-working fireplace alcove, positioned on a hearth beside a modern log burner, or placed in a hallway corner as a piece of framed textile art.

Dust the timber frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax sparingly along the grain, while keeping the needlework panel away from direct heat and strong sunlight to prevent textile degradation.
