Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Sculptural floor lamps and torchieres originated in 17th and 18th-century Venice during the Baroque period. Designed to illuminate grand palazzos and reception halls, these hand-carved figures held torches, candles, or multi-branch candelabras, serving as both functional lighting and theatrical status symbols.

These figures were typically carved from lightweight hardwoods such as lime or pine, coated in gesso, and finished using polychrome paint techniques and gold leaf gilding. Later additions often included cast metal or bronze candelabra arms to accommodate multiple candles or electrical wiring.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand-carving marks, natural shrinkage cracks in the wood following the grain, and multi-layered gesso beneath the paint. Age-appropriate wear to gilding, oxidisation on metal fittings, and historical electrical conversion marks also help establish age.

Large sculptural torchieres are traditionally styled in pairs to create symmetry. Designers place them flanking a grand doorway, positioning them on either side of a large sideboard, or framing an entrance hall console to add vertical height and historical contrast.

Dust surfaces gently using a soft, dry ostrich feather duster or dry watercolour brush to avoid snagging delicate gilding. Avoid water, damp cloths, or chemical cleaners, which dissolve gesso and historic paint layers, and keep items away from direct heat sources to prevent timber cracking.
