This nineteenth-century French apothecary jar originates from circa 1890. The piece takes a cylindrical form in turquoise blue glass, set with a white and gold enamel label bearing black gilded lettering for "EAU de MENTHE". A brass and red-coloured stopper caps the top, completing the construction of glass, porcelain, brass, and cork. The object measures 30 cm high, 12 cm wide, and 12 cm deep. In a modern interior, this item sits appropriately on a sideboard top or bookshelf as a decorative display object. The design fits easily into eclectic, traditional, or period rooms, bringing historic character to a living room, hallway, or study.

A 19th-century French apothecary jar is a vessel used by pharmacists and chemists to store liquid preparations, dried herbs, and powders. Often crafted from coloured blown glass with hand-painted or porcelain enamel labels, these jars served both practical storage and decorative display functions in historical pharmacies.

These jars were typically manufactured from mouth-blown or moulded glass in shades such as cobalt, turquoise, or amber to protect light-sensitive compounds. Labels were often constructed from glazed porcelain, painted enamel, or gilded paper, sealed under glass or fired directly onto the vessel surface.

Authentic pieces generally display period-correct characteristics such as pontil marks on the base, minor irregularities in the blown glass, hand-gilded lettering, and age-consistent wear on the stopper contact surfaces.

Place the jar on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or open shelving as a standalone accent piece or styled alongside architectural antiques and books. Grouping vessels of varying heights and tones creates a structured visual focal point in bathrooms, dining areas, or living rooms.

Clean the glass exterior gently using a soft cloth and mild soap solution, avoiding abrasive chemicals that could damage gilded or enamel labels. Ensure the stopper area remains dry to prevent mineral build-up or binding between glass surfaces.
