This small chest is a colonial style storage piece in teak with a warm brown finish. It dates from around 1900 and shows visible dovetailed corner joints, a brass keyhole escutcheon, a hinged flat lid, and a moulded plinth base, alongside surface knocks, marks, and small edge chips consistent with age and use. The timber displays a rich grain and deep colouration, and the lid operates on hinges above a rectangular body. It measures 33 cm high, 64 cm wide, and 37 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this chest suits placement on a surface or floor in a study, hallway, or living area to hold documents, stationery, or small personal items. Its sturdy construction provides practical everyday storage while maintaining a traditional aesthetic.

Teak storage chests were traditionally constructed for sea travel, military campaign transport, and domestic storage due to the exceptional durability and water resistance of the timber. Originating predominantly in maritime and colonial trade routes, these trunks served as robust containers for textiles, valuables, and personal possessions.

Historic teak chests were crafted using dense teak timber joined with hand-cut dovetailed corners for enhanced structural integrity. Hardware typically included cast brass escutcheons, iron hinges, and occasionally reinforced metal corner brackets designed to withstand heavy transportation.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, subtle irregularities in the wood surface from hand-planing, and genuine wear around the keyhole and base. Teak acquires a deep, dark patina over time, and original brass fittings often show natural oxidisation rather than uniform machine finishes.

A wooden storage chest functions effectively as a grounding element in modern spaces, serving as a low-profile coffee table, entryway seating trunk, or bedside storage. The rich timber grain adds warmth and contrast when placed against clean contemporary walls or neutral textiles.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber. Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners, damp cloths, or placing the piece near direct heat sources, which can dry out the wood.
