This sterling silver Christening mug originates from the interwar period, hallmarked in Birmingham in 1920 by silversmith Joseph Gloster. The piece presents a polished silver colour throughout, displaying a flared rim, a smooth loop handle on the right side, and a stepped, circular spreading foot at the base. Finely engraved foliage and flowers decorate the body alongside a vacant cartouche, complemented by a dotted border running just beneath the upper rim and vertical tool marks visible on the inner surface. The mug measures 8.1 cm in height, 6.2 cm across the bowl, and 9 cm in width including the handle, with a total weight of 74 grams. In a contemporary home, this item serves primarily as a decorative display piece on a bookshelf or cabinet, preserving traditional presentation styles for Christening gifts. The bright metallic finish and classic proportions suit English Country House interiors, where small silver objects add tactile interest and traditional character to interior arrangements. The design allows it to sit securely on flat surfaces, combining historical silversmithing work with compact dimensions suited to modern display shelves.

Gifting silver at christenings dates back centuries as a gesture of prosperity and wealth, originating the phrase born with a silver spoon in ones mouth. By the early twentieth century, small silver mugs were standard commemorative presents commissioned to mark a childs baptism or birth.

British christening mugs are predominantly made from sterling silver, an alloy containing 92.5 percent pure silver and 7.5 percent copper for strength. They are crafted by raising or seaming sheet metal, attaching hollow or cast handles, and finishing with hand engraving and stamped hallmarks.

Authentic British silver items feature official assay office hallmarks, including the lion passant mark for sterling purity, a city mark, a year date letter, and a makers initials. Examining these stamped marks with a loupe confirms the exact age, origin, and silversmith.

Small silver vessels bring a subtle metallic highlight to open bookshelves, vanity tables, or sideboards. They can be styled individually, grouped with other silverware, or repurposed as small desk organisers and stem flower holders.

Silver should be cleaned gently using warm water and liquid soap, followed by immediate drying with a soft cotton cloth. Tarnish can be removed using a non-abrasive silver polishing cloth or foam, avoiding harsh chemical dips that strip away oxidized detail in carved areas.
