These Georgian Old Sheffield Plate candlesticks date from around 1770 in the Georgian Neoclassical style, fashioned from silver and copper with a silver colouration. The pair exhibits fluted column stems, tiered square bases, beaded borders, and acanthus capitals, alongside removable sconces. Each candlestick measures 32 cm high, 13 cm wide, and 13 cm deep. Such traditional items find practical placement on a mantelpiece to bring ambient illumination to a period sitting room, dining area, or hallway console table. Their refined proportions and classical architectural motifs integrate seamlessly into formal interior schemes while offering functional display space for traditional taper candles during evening gatherings.

FAQs

Old Sheffield Plate refers to a process invented in the 18th century where a thin layer of sterling silver is fused to a copper ingot before being rolled into sheets and worked into decorative objects.

These candlesticks were made by hammering or die-stamping fused silver-and-copper sheets, often featuring core fillings such as resin or lead to provide weight and stability to the base and shaft.

Authentic pieces frequently display copper showing through worn silver areas, known as bleeding, along with hand-applied silver wire edges designed to conceal exposed copper borders.

A pair can be arranged symmetrically on a dining table, sideboard, or mantelpiece to add architectural structure, metallic warmth, and neoclassical proportions to contemporary spaces.

Clean gently using a soft cloth and non-abrasive silver polish, taking care to avoid aggressive rubbing or harsh chemical dip treatments that can wear away the thin silver layer.
