19th century
For Sale by Antiques4EU
Description

This lovely old Pair of Early 19th Century Antique English Georgian Old Sheffield Plate Telescopic Candlesticks sadly can no longer fulfil their original claim to be telescopic since, like so many of their peers, they will not stay up when extended, but simply slip back down again ! This can of course be remedied by the insertion of a slip of tissue paper, but, that said, they nevertheless remain very beautiful and are sure to add charm and grace to any dining table.

Height ~ 19.00 cm. / 7.48 inches ~ Width ~ 11.00 cm. / 4.33 inches ~ Depth ~ 11.00 cm. / 4.33 inches ~ Year ~ circa 1825

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Copper showing through silver plate: fused plate worn down by two centuries of polishing.
Foliate cast borders: popular decorative work of the late Georgian period.
Telescopic extending sleeve: mechanical patent design introduced in the early nineteenth century.
Weighted circular bases: standard stability method for tall table candlesticks of the era.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

These early nineteenth-century English Georgian candlesticks are formed from Old Sheffield plate combining silver and copper surfaces in a warm silver and copper colour palette. Each piece stands on a circular stepped base featuring gadrooned rims and embossed floral borders matching the sconces at the top. The turned telescopic columns display polished metallic sections interspersed with decorative embossed collars revealing copper undertones beneath the silver plating. Measuring 19 cm high by 11 cm wide and 11 cm deep, the pair cannot currently stay extended when raised due to wear in the mechanism, though this mechanism remains fully intact. Today, these decorative table accessories sit effectively upon a mantelpiece or serve as a centrepiece on a dining table to provide traditional illumination and period character. Their reflective metallic finish and intricate floral motifs complement formal dining rooms, drawing rooms, or traditional hallways.

Old Sheffield Plate refers to a metalworking process developed in the 18th century where a layer of sterling silver was thermally fused onto a copper ingot before being rolled into sheets for crafting objects.

These candlesticks feature an internal sliding mechanism within the central column, allowing the upper nozzle section to extend upwards or collapse down to alter the height of the candle.

Authentic pieces frequently show silver wear where the underlying copper core shows through, rolled wire edges designed to conceal raw copper seams, and a lack of late 19th-century electroplating hallmarks.

Position a pair symmetrically on a mantelpiece, console table, or dining table to add vertical interest and metallic contrast against contemporary decorative items.

Clean gently using a soft microfibre cloth and specialized non-abrasive silver cream, taking care not to rub aggressively over areas where the silver layer has thinned down to the copper.
