Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian open bookcase is constructed from mahogany with a warm brown colour and a deep natural patina. The small-scale piece exhibits a galleried upstand along the top surface, moulded edges down the sides, and four tiers of open shelving held by sawtooth shelf supports above a plain plinth base. Age-related marks and scratches appear throughout the timber, alongside two small holes on the bottom shelf. The piece measures 110 cm high, 63 cm wide, and 26 cm deep. Positioned in a study, library, or hallway, the compact unit holds books, photographs, and decorative items while occupying minimal floor space. The adjustable shelves accommodate various volumes and objects of differing heights. The slim proportions suit narrow alcoves or smaller rooms in a contemporary home.

FAQs

Open bookcases from the nineteenth century are characterised by exposed shelving without glass doors, designed for accessible storage. They often feature galleried upstands, molded cornices, and adjustable shelf heights supported by notched side strips.

These bookcases were primarily constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers laid over pine or oak carcases. Shelves were fitted using tongue-and-groove joinery or internal wooden sawtooth support systems.

Authentic pieces display hand-planed rear boards, natural timber shrinkage along joints, and hand-cut joinery. Genuine mahogany exhibits a deep patination that develops naturally from age and oxidation.

An open mahogany bookcase can be positioned within a hallway, alcove, or home office to display bound volumes, ceramics, or framed artwork. The dark timber contrasts effectively against neutral modern wall surfaces.

Dust the surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year following the wood grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement and fading.
