A French Louis XVI Neoclassical rectangular stool from around 1900, rendered in the style often associated with Gustavian design. Constructed from beech wood, it carries a distressed, rubbed white painted finish that reveals the timeworn timber underneath, complemented by carved rosette details at the corners, a guilloche frieze along the rails, and fluted tapered legs ending in simple feet. The woven cane seat shows signs of wear and is ready for a replacement or a complete upholstery project. Structurally sound with solid joints, the piece measures 42 cm high, 67 cm wide, and 37 cm deep. In a contemporary home, it serves well placed at the foot of a bed, as a dressing table seat, or as a low occasional bench in a living room.

Louis XVI Neoclassical furniture, originating in late 18th-century France, is defined by geometric symmetry, straight lines, and classical Greco-Roman motifs. Common elements include fluted tapered legs, rosette carvings, and delicate carved friezes.

These pieces were typically carved from hardwoods such as beech or walnut, often featuring woven rattan cane seats or stuffed upholstery. Surfaces were frequently painted in pale chalky tones or gilded to highlight carved detailing.

Authentic examples display layered paint finish wear, showing natural wood or gesso beneath in high-touch areas. Construction details such as hand-cut joinery, pegged joints, and traditional woven cane work indicate genuine age.

Position the stool at the foot of a bed, beneath a console table, or alongside a bay window as an accent piece. Combining distressed painted woodwork with contemporary linen fabrics or minimalist decor creates a balanced contrast.

Dust gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush to clean intricate carvings and cane weaving without damaging delicate paint layers. Avoid placing the item near direct heat sources or high humidity to prevent wood warping and cane degradation.
