London City Antiques has dated this French Kingwood Writing Desk to the 1880s.

The upper section is fitted with two cupboards, open compartments and a small central drawer, all decorated with fine geometric parquetry. Above is a shaped marble top surrounded by a pierced gilt-brass gallery, while below is a green leather writing surface with gilt tooling.

The main body is beautifully shaped, with further parquetry decoration, a central drawer and richly cast gilded mounts to the shoulders. The elegant cabriole-style legs terminate in gilt feet and are joined by a shaped lower shelf, also decorated with matching parquetry and gilt edging.

The quality of the cabinetmaking is particularly noticeable throughout, with the warm tones of the kingwood beautifully contrasted by the lighter inlay, gilded metalwork and marble. The piece is freestanding, allowing it to be positioned away from a wall and appreciated from all sides.

This is a very decorative and refined example of late 19th-century French furniture, combining the practicality of a compact writing desk with the elegance and detail associated with high-quality Parisian cabinetmaking of the period. Its compact proportions also make it ideal for a bedroom, dressing room, study or elegant drawing room.

A wonderfully decorative antique French bonheur du jour, with superb parquetry, gilt mounts, marble, fitted interior and leather writing surface. An excellent statement piece with both practical use and strong decorative appeal.
