Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian sterling silver photo frame dates from 1890 and displays ornate pierced scrollwork, cherubs, birds, floral motifs, a heart cresting at the top, and a figural scene with a lady and gentleman. The solid silver border surrounds a burgundy velvet backing and is supported by an easel backstand, bearing London hallmarks for 1895 and retailer details for the Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company. The piece measures 23 cm tall by 17 cm across, with an internal opening of 14 cm by 9.5 cm. Placed on a bedside table, desk, or mantelpiece, the frame brings period character to domestic spaces while holding a favourite portrait. The silver shows detailed relief work and the rear backing retains its functional stand for tabletop display. The frame combines traditional metalsmithing with romantic iconography typical of late nineteenth-century decorative arts.

FAQs

Victorian silver photo frames from the late nineteenth century frequently feature elaborate pierced or repousse decoration, incorporating naturalistic motifs such as cherubs, birds, and foliage influenced by Neo-Rococo revivals.

These frames were typically crafted with a thin sterling silver front, often die-stamped or pierced, mounted onto a fabric or velvet-covered board with an easel back for tabletop display.

Authentic British sterling silver items bear complete hallmarking, including a makers mark, town mark, lion passant denoting purity, and a date letter specifying the exact year of manufacture.

Positioning an ornate silver photo frame on a wooden mantelpiece, bedside table, or desk provides classic elegance and a tactile accent that complements modern neutral decor.

Dust the frame regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and gently polish with a silver cloth, avoiding wet polishes that could ruin or discolour the velvet backing.
