This Victorian sterling silver photo frame displays the intricate motifs and decorative richness characteristic of late-nineteenth-century craftsmanship. The piece features elaborate pierced openwork, repousse foliage, Rococo scrolls, and a prominent cartouche top, surrounding a rectangular aperture lined with maroon fabric backing. Made from sterling silver with a reflective finish and deep red velvet, the structure measures 20 cm tall by 14 cm across, with an internal opening measuring 13.5 cm by 9.5 cm. The silver shows very good preservation bearing the Birmingham hallmark for 1897 and silversmith mark for S. Blanckensee & Sons, while the backing and stand display wear and fading. Suitable for tabletop display, this item sits appropriately atop a sideboard in a living room, study, or hallway to showcase a cherished photograph.

Victorian silver photo frames from the late 19th century frequently featured elaborate repousse work, Rococo scroll motifs, and pierced openwork patterns. Designed primarily for tabletop display, these frames held portrait photographs and served as prominent decorative elements in domestic interiors.

These frames typically consist of a embossed sterling silver front mounted onto a sturdy easel back made of velvet, leather, or hardwood. The silver facade was shaped using die-stamping or repousse techniques to create detailed dimensional relief patterns.

Authentic late Victorian silver frames feature official assay hallmarks, including a lion passant for sterling purity, a town mark, a date letter, and a makers mark. The presence of these stamped marks along the front border verifies the silver standard and production period.

Place the frame on a sideboard, console table, or bedside cabinet alongside contemporary books and ceramic items to create a layered display. The metallic surface reflects ambient light and adds textural contrast to modern interiors.

Dust the frame regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and clean intricate repousse areas with a specialist silver polishing cloth or a soft-bristled brush. Avoid submerging the item in water or using harsh liquid polish that could damage the fabric backing.
