Antique Arts & Crafts Glazed Bookcase C.1910

1900 - 1920
For Sale by MebleinUK
Description

A beautiful and elegant antique Arts & Crafts glazed bookcase / display cabinet, dating from the early 20th century, circa 1900–1920.

This impressive tall cabinet features a pair of full-length doors with attractive arched glazed upper sections, complemented by decorative panelled sections below. The glass is divided by slender vertical glazing bars, giving the cabinet a particularly elegant period appearance.

Inside are multiple spacious shelves, providing excellent storage and display space for books, collectables, ceramics or decorative objects while maintaining a relatively slim depth of only 30 cm.

The cabinet retains its original lock and key, a particularly desirable feature in an antique piece of this age. Traditional moulded cornice detailing, small turned feet and restrained decorative carving to the lower door panels complete the design.

The dark timber finish has developed an attractive aged character and works particularly well with the simple Arts & Crafts influenced construction.

The bookcase is in very good antique condition, with age-related marks, minor surface wear and natural variations in colour consistent with its age and previous use. These form part of the authentic character of the piece.

An attractive and highly practical period bookcase with excellent proportions, ideal for a living room, study, library, hallway or traditional interior.

Arts and Crafts furniture, produced primarily between 1880 and 1920, emphasizes structural simplicity, visible joinery, and the natural beauty of timber. The movement favoured handcrafted construction and subtle geometric or organic carved motifs over mass-produced ornamentation.

Edwardian and Arts and Crafts bookcases were typically constructed from solid native hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut. Glazed doors feature float glass panes framed in timber mullions, accompanied by internal adjustable wooden shelving and brass hardware.

Authentic pieces display traditional woodworking techniques, including mortise and tenon joints, dovetailing on drawers, and original hand-cut glass panes. The presence of natural age-related patina on the wood finish and brass fittings also indicates genuine provenance.

A glazed oak bookcase can be styled in a modern home as a focal display cabinet for ceramics, glassware, or curated art objects alongside books. Placing dark oak furniture against neutral or bold contemporary wall colours provides visual contrast while integrating historical texture into the room.

Keep oak furniture away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and finish fading. Clean wood surfaces with a dry microfiber cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually, while glass panels should be cleaned with a dedicated glass cleaner applied to a cloth rather than directly onto the frame.
