Rare Pair of Late 19th Century Miniature Table Top Bamboo Cupboards, Aesthetic Design

19th century
Description

An Extremely Rare And Unusual Pair Of Decorative Late 19th Century, Aesthetic Movement Bamboo Miniature Cupboards, Or Table Top Cabinets, In The Anglo-Japanese Taste, Having Attractive Cane Panelled Decoration Throughout.

Dating from the latter part of the 19th century, this highly unusual pair of miniature cupboards are very much typical of the fascination with Japanese design which became increasingly fashionable during the Aesthetic Movement.

Constructed predominantly from bamboo, they retain a lovely warm colour and surface throughout, with attractive woven cane panels to the tops, sides and doors. Particularly appealing are the circular bamboo motifs to the fronts, incorporating an arrangement of slender bamboo uprights, which give the cabinets significant decorative interest and a distinctly Oriental feel.

It is particularly unusual to find two matching examples surviving together and their relatively diminutive proportions make them extremely easy to accommodate around the home. They could be used as small bedside cupboards, positioned either side of a sofa, or simply enjoyed as highly decorative occasional cabinets.

As with all items which we offer for sale these cupboards have been attended to in our workshops, where they have received a natural wax polish and any necessary traditional restoration, before being offered for sale ready to place straight into the home.

Aesthetic Movement bamboo furniture gained prominence in the late nineteenth century, heavily influenced by Japonisme and Anglo-Japanese design trends. Artisans incorporated natural bamboo and cane to create lightweight, decorative pieces that emphasized texture and form over heavy Victorian ornamentation.

These pieces typically feature hollow bamboo stalks for structural framing, woven rattan or cane paneling, wood or board interiors, and small cast metal hinges or decorative latches.

Authentic period pieces feature natural variations in bamboo nodes, hand-fitted joints pinned with small wooden pegs, hand-woven cane webbing, and signs of age such as minor surface patination and oxidisation on metal fittings.

Miniature cabinets can be styled atop a sideboard, hallway console, or desk to add texture and organic structure. They function well as decorative display pieces or as compact tabletop storage for small items.

Keep bamboo furniture away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent drying or cracking. Clean dust regularly using a soft-bristled brush or a dry lint-free cloth, avoiding harsh liquid cleaners.
