Developed in the mid-eighteenth century, Old Sheffield Plate involved fusing a layer of sterling silver onto a copper ingot before rolling it into sheets, creating accessible silver tableware such as multi-bottle wine coolers for formal dining.

These vessels typically featured an outer silver-plated copper casing fitted with an internal removable insert containing separate collars or liners to hold ice and keep multiple wine bottles chilled simultaneously.

Authentic pieces often display thin seams, rolled silver edges designed to conceal the central copper layer, and slight signs of copper showing through high-wear areas, known as bleeding.

Position the cooler as a dining table centrepiece or place it on a sideboard filled with botanical arrangements, rolled linen napkins, or beverage bottles during entertainment.

Clean gently using a soft cloth and a specialised non-abrasive silver polish, avoiding harsh chemicals or aggressive rubbing that could wear through the fused silver layer to the copper beneath.
