Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. This Victorian photo frame is made of sterling silver with a dark wooden easel back, measuring 19.5 cm high, 15 cm wide, and 1.5 cm deep. The arched rectangular frame displays detailed pierced scrollwork and foliate ornamentation, incorporating mythological and classical figures along the silver border. Hallmarks for Rosenthal, Jacob and Company from London 1891 and the Registered Design number Rd 57109 are stamped on the surface. The backing consists of dark polished timber with a hinged stand attached to the rear. The frame is suitable for display on a mantelpiece or desk in a home today, holding a cherished portrait photograph. The silver border reflects light across the intricate openwork patterns, contrasting with the warm tones of the wooden backing material. This accessory complements traditional interior settings and serves as a functional decorative object for living spaces or studies.

FAQs

Sterling silver photo frames gained immense popularity during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras as photography became a widespread medium for personal portraiture. Silversmiths utilised advanced die-stamping and repousse techniques to create elaborate, decorative borders to display family photographs on desks and tables.

These frames typically consist of a thin sheet of embossed or pierced sterling silver mounted onto a rigid wood, velvet, or leatherette backing. The reverse includes an easel stand hinged to the backboard, enabling the frame to stand upright on flat surfaces.

Authentic British pieces feature official hallmarks stamped into the silver, including the lion passant mark for sterling quality, a town mark, a date letter, and a makers mark. The silver faceplate will also show signs of genuine hand-finishing or traditional die-stamping along the edges.

An ornate silver frame provides a striking textural contrast when placed on modern minimalist surfaces such as marble, dark timber, or painted shelving. Grouping silver frames alongside contemporary black-and-white prints creates a curated, layered aesthetic.

Tarnish should be removed gently using a soft, non-abrasive silver cloth or specialised silver foam. Avoid immersing the frame in water or exposing the fabric and timber backing to chemical liquid dips, as moisture can warp the wood and damage adhesives.
