Description

This is a very beautiful antique Chinese gentleman's silver-mounted walking stick, circa 1870 in date and bearing  impressed Chinese marks 

The exquisite L-shaped Chinese silver handle is superbly decorated with prunus blossom and bamboo, with Chinese good fortune character marks

The handle is directly mounted on a splendid, ebonised hardwood shaft.

 

? / ? (shòu) — longevity, long life. This is a very common auspicious symbol, especially on objects intended as gifts or household decorations.

? (fú) — good fortune, blessing, happiness. One of the most common Chinese auspicious characters.

? / ? (lù) — prosperity, wealth, especially success and material well-being. Traditionally associated with official rank and prosperity.

? (xi) or another auspicious character — happiness/joy. The carving is too worn for me to be completely certain here.

Size of cane that you need

Chinese export silver items were produced during the late Qing dynasty, primarily from the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth century, for export to Western markets. Silver-handled walking sticks combined traditional Chinese metalworking motifs, such as prunus blossoms or dragons, with European utilitarian forms.

These canes typically feature a solid or repousse silver handle, a shaft constructed from dense hardwoods such as ebony, malacca, or ebonised timber, and a protective metal ferrule, such as brass or steel, at the tip base.
