Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 18th and early 19th centuries, snuff boxes were compact pocket containers crafted to carry powdered tobacco. Manufactured primarily in precious metals, they served as everyday personal accessories and symbols of social standing within Georgian society.

These boxes were constructed from sterling silver sheets using hand-forming, soldering, and specialized techniques like engine-turning for exterior patterns. The interiors were frequently finished with a silver-gilt wash to protect the metal from oxidisation caused by salt and moisture in tobacco.

Authentic Georgian silver carries official British assay hallmarks, typically stamped on the base or inside lid. These include a makers mark, the lion passant purity mark, a town mark, a date letter, and the sovereigns head duty mark used between 1784 and 1890.

A Georgian silver box functions well as a decorative accent placed on a desk, coffee table tray, or bookshelf. It can be positioned alongside leather-bound books or other metal decorative items to add historical texture to contemporary surfaces.

Silver-gilt items should be dusted with a clean, soft cotton or microfibre cloth. Chemical silver polishes and abrasive creams should be avoided, as they can strip the thin layer of gilded gold wash applied to the silver base.
