This Edwardian sterling silver snuff box takes an oval silhouette with a lustrous silver finish. The hinged lid displays a repoussé figural scene of dancing figures before a rural backdrop, complemented by an ornate scrollwork border and stamped hallmarks including 925. German silversmith Jean L. Schlingloff of Hanau produced the piece, which received British import marks for Chester in 1907 via sponsor Arthur Graf. Measuring approximately 5 cm long by 4 cm wide by 2 cm deep, this compact gentleman's library accessory weighs 30.8 grams. Suitable for an office desk or display cabinet, the box stores small personal items securely. The structure includes a tightly closing hinged lid with operational hardware and detailed border mouldings encircling the central figural panel. Collectors of antique silver items place such portable containers within curated displays or tabletop arrangements to highlight period craftsmanship.

Snuff boxes originated in the seventeenth century as specialized pocket containers designed to keep powdered tobacco dry and fresh. By the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, they evolved into portable status symbols crafted by skilled silversmiths using relief decoration and intricate engraving.

These boxes were typically constructed from sterling silver or high-grade continental silver. Silversmiths employed techniques such as repousse relief hammering, chasing, and hand-engraving, along with precision-fitted flush hinges to ensure an airtight closure.

Authentic pieces carry distinct hallmarking systems. British imports from the early twentieth century feature sponsor marks, town marks such as the Chester acorn, assay purity marks, and date letters, while Hanau silver often displays pseudo-hallmarks or maker marks associated with specific German workshops.

Small antique silver containers work exceptionally well as decorative accents on curated desk trays, stacked atop art books on a coffee table, or displayed inside a glass cabinet alongside other period collectables.

Maintain silver items by dusting them gently with a soft microfibre cloth and using a mild silver polish sparingly when tarnishing occurs. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or submerging hinged areas in liquid, as moisture can trapped inside the mechanism.
