Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Introduced in the late eighteenth century and widely produced throughout the Victorian era, these decorative baskets were designed to serve sugar or sweetmeats at the dining table. The contrast between pierced silver-gilt metalwork and vivid glass liners reflected nineteenth-century decorative trends.

The outer frame is crafted from silver or base metal plated with gold, known as silver-gilt or vermeil, featuring pierced fretwork and cast motifs. The inner liner consists of hand-blown cranberry glass, which obtains its red colour through the addition of gold salts during the molten phase.

Authentic period pieces usually feature official silver hallmarks stamped on the metal frame or rim, indicating the maker, city, and date letter. The glass liner should fit precisely into the framework, often showing evidence of hand-blowing, such as a polished pontil mark on the base.

A silver-gilt glass basket serves as an accent on a dining sideboard, console table, or within a glazed display cabinet. Placing the piece near ambient lighting highlights the rich ruby tones of the glass through the openwork metal frame.

Remove the glass liner to wash it separately in warm water using a mild soap and a soft cloth. Clean the silver-gilt frame with a soft, dry microfibre cloth; abrasive cleaners and liquid dips should be avoided, as they can strip the thin layer of gold.
