A Fine Coaching Travelling Trunk by Wm. Insall of Bristol

19th century
Description

An original small coaching trunk dating from the first half of the 19th century, of rectangular form with a flat lid. The wooden frame is covered in black canvas treated to give a rain-repellent, weatherproofed finish, as was typical of luggage designed to travel outside on coaches and requiring protection from the elements.

The trunk retains its original brass stud-work, iron corner reinforcements, side carrying handles, and its original lock and clasp (no key present). The interior is lined throughout with its original star-patterned paper and linen, and includes a removable lidded compartment/tray for smaller items. The underside of the lid bears the printed trade label of Wm. Insall, Manufacturer of Improved Solid Leather Portmanteaus, of 19 St Augustine's Parade, Bristol.

Insall was a highly regarded Bristol trunk and portmanteau maker, producing luggage of notably fine quality that is now scarce on the market. While the firm is recorded as having been established in 1829 at St Augustine's Parade, the earliest known record of a John Insall trading in Bristol dates to 1796, suggesting a longer family history in the trade.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A coaching trunk was a durable piece of luggage designed for travel by stagecoach or carriage in the 18th and 19th centuries, built with reinforced edges and weather-resistant materials.

These trunks were typically constructed from a wooden frame wrapped in heavy hide or leather, bound with iron brackets, lined with cloth or paper, and secured with brass studs.

Authentic pieces feature period joinery, hand-applied brass studs, hand-forged iron corner brackets, original lock plates or brass escutcheons, and maker labels or stamps.

A leather trunk can serve as a functional coffee table, a foot-of-bed storage chest, or a decorative accent piece in a hallway or study.

Keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying, clean gently with a dry soft cloth, and apply specialist leather conditioner periodically.
