This late Victorian table lamp comes from the Gothic Revival period, executed in polished brass alongside a softly tinted yellow vaseline glass shade. The piece stands on four shaped paw feet beneath a circular architectural base, supporting a finely modelled kneeling angel figure with detailed outstretched wings, draped robes, and a tall staff entwined with foliate ornament. Above the sculptural figure, the slender stem rises into a pierced crown-form gallery that holds the fluted, frilled glass shade housing a single electric light fitting. The lamp measures 70 cm high by 20 cm wide and 20 cm deep, operating as a functional lighting fixture suitable for placement atop a sideboard or accent table in a traditionally styled living room, hallway, or study today.

FAQs

Gothic Revival lighting draws inspiration from medieval ecclesiastical architecture, featuring pointed arches, figurative sculptures, trefoils, and elaborate brass or bronze metalwork popularized during the nineteenth century.

Lamps from this period frequently combined cast or turned brass, bronze, and gilt metal bases with blown glass shades, including coloured, cranberry, or fluorescent vaseline glass.

Authentic period pieces display crisp casting details with natural surface patina, hand-finished metal joints, heavy bases, and glass shades that show minor irregularities or pontil marks from original hand-blowing processes.

Position the lamp on a dark wood sideboard, console table, or library desk alongside textured ceramics, books, and rich paint tones to create an atmospheric focal point.

Dust metal components regularly with a soft dry cloth, avoiding abrasive polishes that strip original patina, and gently hand-wash glass shades in lukewarm soapy water.
