18th Century Carved Oak Cupboard on Chest

18th century
For Sale by LTANTIQUES.CO.UK
Description

A fine mid-18th-century carved oak cupboard on chest base, dating to circa 1750. Constructed in two separate pieces for ease of transportation, the carved frieze has a drawer to the front, above a pair of richly carved panelled doors, decorated with charming cherub motifs amidst scrolling foliage and foliate ornament. The doors open to reveal a single shelf inside.

The cupboard sits on a substantial chest base, comprising two short over two long graduated drawers, retaining attractive brass ring handles. The drawers and base are extensively carved with scrolling acanthus-style foliage and floral decoration, complementing the elaborate carving of the upper section.

Presented in a softly bleached raw oak finish, highlighting the depth and detail of the original carving. A characterful and decorative antique piece with excellent presence, suitable for both traditional and modern interiors.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cupboard on chest is a two-tier storage piece combining an upper cabinet fitted with doors over a lower section composed of drawers, historically used for storing linens and clothing.

Pieces from this era were constructed primarily from solid European oak, utilizing hand-cut joinery, pegged mortise and tenon joints, and hand-carved decorative relief panels.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-planed rear panels, minor irregularities in the hand-carved ornamentation, historical timber shrinkage, and original pegged construction methods.

Designers frequently position substantial oak pieces as focal anchors in hallways, dining areas, or master bedrooms, balancing the detailed carved woodwork against neutral wall finishes and simplified modern furnishings.

Care involves regular dusting with a dry, soft cloth, periodic light application of natural beeswax to protect the timber finish, and maintaining a stable environment away from direct heat sources.
