This nineteenth-century Victorian display cabinet is constructed from mahogany with glass and a rich, warm dark brown finish. The piece takes the form of a small cabinet with a moulded top edge, a traditional plinth base, and twin glazed doors featuring arched framing over internal wooden shelving. Signs of age include surface wear and scuffs on the wooden base. The cabinet measures 91 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 36 cm deep, with internal shelves providing storage space for china, glassware, books, or decorative objects. In a contemporary home, the cabinet serves as a functional display and storage unit in a gentleman's library, living room, study, or hallway. The compact proportions allow it to fit easily into smaller spaces while offering ample display capacity behind the glass doors. The key operates the doors, providing secure access to the interior contents. The traditional design and dark timber tones coordinate well with both period and modern interior schemes.

FAQs

Victorian mahogany glazed cabinets are 19th-century storage pieces characterised by dense mahogany timber, glass-fronted doors, and structured architectural silhouettes designed for displaying books, china, or curiosities.

Craftsmen primarily utilised solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over pine or oak carcases, combined with hand-cut glass panels, brass escutcheons, and steel or iron lock mechanisms.

Authentic pieces display signs of period craftsmanship, such as hand-cut joinery, hand-blown glass with subtle imperfections, timber oxidisation inside drawer or cabinet interiors, and original brass hardware.

Position the piece against neutral or deeply painted walls to highlight the wood grain, and use the glazed interior to showcase modern ceramics, framed artwork, or curated book collections.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish twice yearly along the direction of the grain, keeping the cabinet away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight.
