Old Sheffield Plate refers to a process invented in the eighteenth century where a layer of sterling silver is fused to a thicker ingot of copper before being rolled into sheets. This technique allowed silversmiths to produce substantial household tableware at a fraction of the cost of solid silver.

Georgian silver meat domes were hand-hammered into shape from sheets of silver-plated copper or solid silver. Cast elements, such as handles depicting vines or foliage, were soldered to the top, while rims were reinforced with silver wire or decorative border mouldings.

Authentic Old Sheffield Plate pieces typically feature exposed copper edges or turned silver wire rims designed to hide the copper core. They often display insert silver shields for engraved coats of arms and carry maker marks specific to eighteenth and early nineteenth-century Sheffield workshops.

A large silver meat dome can serve as a decorative focal point placed on a dining room sideboard or a kitchen dresser. It can also function as a striking table centrepiece during formal entertaining.

Clean Old Sheffield Plate gently using a mild silver foam or soft cloth to prevent rubbing through the thin silver layer to the underlying copper. Store in a dry environment and avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh chemical polishes.
