Pair of George III Style Giltwood Eagle Wall Sconces

An impressive pair of George III style carved giltwood wall sconces, each surmounted by a ribbon-tied crest above a long, draped backplate. The centre is decorated with a black-painted eagle with outstretched wings, resting above a boldly carved arrangement of acanthus leaves.

Each sconce has two scrolling gilt-metal candle arms with foliate decoration and turned candle holders, accompanied by delicate chains, floral ornaments and hanging tassels. The backplates terminate in carved cords and tassels, completing the elaborate neoclassical design.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Giltwood wall sconces gained widespread popularity during the George III period in eighteenth-century Britain. Influenced by Neoclassical design, these fixtures were engineered to magnify candlelight across dining rooms and drawing rooms while displaying carved decorative motifs.

Authentic period pieces were constructed from hand-carved softwoods, such as pine or lime, coated in layers of gesso. Thin sheets of gold leaf were applied over the gesso using water-gilding techniques, while metal branches held the candle nozzles.

Original pieces display hand-carving marks, minor shrinkage cracks in the wood underneath, and exposed white gesso where gilding has worn naturally over time. Socket construction often features hand-turned metal candle nozzles or hand-forged arms.

Position the pair symmetrically to flank a substantial wall mirror, mantelpiece, or artwork. The golden tones and architectural silhouette provide structural warmth and vertical scale against neutral or deeply painted walls.

Dust giltwood surfaces lightly using a soft feather duster or dry camel-hair brush. Avoid water, damp cloths, and chemical cleaning agents, as moisture dissolves traditional water-gilding and damages underlying gesso.
