This George V sterling silver and mother-of-pearl dessert set for twelve persons dates to 1918/19 and carries hallmarks for Sheffield from Harrison Brothers & Howson. The twenty-four pieces include twelve knives measuring 18.9 cm long and twelve three-tined forks measuring 15 cm long, all sitting in a fitted dark brown wooden canteen. The cutlery has white mother-of-pearl handles and hallmarked silver blades with simple patterned detailing. The open wooden box displays a contrasting green velvet lining, brass hinges, and an escutcheon on the front lid. Well cared for over the years, the set presents a practical and traditional addition to a dining collection for hosting guests. It is suited for placement on a sideboard top or within a dining room cabinet when not in use for formal meals and dinner parties. The fitted interior keeps each knife and fork securely in place against the velvet backing, protecting the silver blades and pearlescent handles between gatherings.

Popularised in the 19th and early 20th centuries, silver and mother-of-pearl dessert sets were designed specifically for eating fruit and sweet courses, preventing acidic fruit juices from reacting with base metals.

These sets typically feature solid sterling silver or silver-plated blades and prongs, iridescent mother-of-pearl shell handles, and a velvet-lined wooden storage canteen.

Authentic pieces bear official British hallmark stamps on the silver blades or ferrules, indicating the maker, silver purity mark, assay office, and date letter corresponding to the George V era.

Display the open wooden canteen on a sideboard or buffet as a decorative accent, or lay the place settings alongside contemporary tableware during formal dinner courses.

Hand wash gently in warm water with mild soap and dry immediately with a soft cloth. Never submerge mother-of-pearl in hot water or clean it in a dishwasher.
