Pair of Georgian Irish Silver Salt Shovels

18th century
Description

A matched pair of Irish silver salt spoons with distinctive gilded shovel shaped bowls. The spoons are good quality and weigh approximately 14g.

They are both clearly hallmarked for Dublin and are dated 1816 and 1819 with makers marks for James Scott and Samuel Neville.

They are in good condition for their age and the gilding is bright. There are some faint surface marks and a few minor dinks here and there but nothing detrimental. There appears to have been an old repair to the corner of one shovel but it hasn't affected the gilding and they still display well. They have been gently cleaned and polished and are ready for use.

Approximate Measurements:

Length : 4" (10cm)

Shovel : 1" / 2.5cm long x 3/4" / 2cm wide

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Georgian period, open salt cellars were standard on dining tables, requiring small specialised shovels or spoons to serve loose salt without corroding the metal vessel or spilling.

These implements were predominantly crafted from sterling silver, frequently featuring a silver-gilt interior or full gilding in order to protect the silver from the corrosive effects of salt.

Authentic Irish pieces typically display specific hallmarks, including the Hibernia mark, the crowned harp, a duty mark, a date letter, and the makers initials stamped into the silver.

These small decorative items can be displayed alongside antique dining accessories on a sideboard, arranged inside a shadow box, or repurposed for serving modern condiments.

Clean gently using a soft cloth and mild soapy water, avoiding abrasive silver polishes on the gilt finish, and store them in tarnish-resistant cloth away from humidity.
