Old Sheffield Plate was invented in 1743 by Thomas Bolsover in Sheffield. The process involved fixing a layer of sterling silver above and below an ingot of copper; heating this and then rolling it out to produce a high quality and affordable substitute for pure silver that was so expensive at the time. Highly collectable nowadays. T & J Creswick was a prominent firm of silversmiths and cutlery makers formed by brothers Thomas and James Creswick in 1810.
