1900-1930. A French Brass Chamberstick

1900 - 1920
Description

A heavy and well made brass chamberstick thought to be French with the images of four birds in the base including a heron, and what appears to be a winged animal forming the handle and supporting the candle cup. The handle is the head of a fictitious character forming the underside and the smoothness of his flat hat makes a comfortable shape on top to hold the item.

In the UK the character Wee Willy Winkle appears on some items, and this could possible be either Un Latin a spirit or goblin, who was thought to have played harmless tricks if children didn’t go to sleep on time, or Pierrot, famous for the children’s nursery rhyme, Au Clair De La Lune. We can’t be sure, and if someone knows, please advise.

It is a well made, heavy, finely cast item. The candle cup unscrews from the base for easy packing. It measures 15cm across at the widest part, and 10 cm in height, and weighs 480 grams or half a kilo.

There are no signs of damage or repair, and it has been professionally polished to highlight the wildlife details.

Postage and packing for the UK mainland only is included in the price, and for outside areas or delivery abroad please contact us for a delivery quote.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A chamberstick is a portable candleholder featuring a wide saucer base to collect dripped wax and an attached handle for carrying light safely, widely manufactured across France and Western Europe during the 18th to early 20th centuries.

Authentic chambersticks were typically cast from solid brass or bronze, featuring turned candle sockets and hand-chased or repousse surface details on the tray and handle.

Genuine period pieces display cast seam lines, natural surface oxidisation in recessed relief areas, significant physical weight relative to size, and period-appropriate decorative motifs such as mascarons or scrollwork.

Place the item on a bedside table, mantelpiece, or styled bookshelf alongside art and books to introduce metallic warmth, historic texture, and period interest.

Dust regularly using a soft microfiber cloth and gently warm candle wax residual with warm water; refrain from using abrasive polishes that strip natural historic patina and oxidisation.
