DESCRIPTION

A handsome George III Lancashire oak mule chest, circa 1800, with mahogany crossbanding and an attractive warm colour.

The hinged plank top, edged with mahogany crossbanding and a moulded border, opens to reveal a generous vacant storage compartment. The front is arranged as four faux drawer fronts above three functional drawers, creating the appearance of a substantial bank of drawers while retaining the traditional deep storage compartment of the mule-chest form.

The drawer and faux-drawer fronts are framed with contrasting mahogany crossbanding and fitted with brass handles, the arrangement flanked by reeded uprights. The chest is raised on shaped bracket feet.

A particularly practical piece of Georgian country furniture, combining substantial concealed storage beneath the hinged top with three useful drawers below. The restrained mahogany detailing contrasts attractively with the warm oak and gives the chest considerable decorative presence.

The chest is in good, solid antique condition and has an attractive warm colour. There are marks, knocks and scratches consistent with age and use. The hinged top operates freely and the three drawers run well. The chest is structurally sound and has developed an attractive warm colour and characterful surface.
