DESCRIPTIONA handsome George IV mahogany breakfront library bookcase dating from around 1820 and in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster. The moulded cornice sits above a breakfront arrangement of glazed upper bookcases, the central section enclosed by a pair of arched glazed doors flanked by matching arched glazed cupboards to either side.The lower section is centred by a secretaire drawer fitted above a pair of cupboard doors, with further drawers and cupboards to either side, providing a combination of book storage and concealed writing space. The fitted interior incorporates a leather writing surface and an arrangement of small drawers and pigeonholes, creating a practical workspace. The bookcase stands on a plinth base and is of well-balanced proportions throughout.The upper section retains approximately nineteen adjustable shelves with moulded mahogany fronts, offering extensive and flexible storage for books or display.
